e-Festival Of Ideas Serious Games Workshop

From 4-10 May 2009, in conjunction with the Australian Innovation Festival, Vibewire will be holding our 2009 e-Festival Of Ideas.
The e-Festival Of Ideas is an online, interactive forum in which academics, media and politicians come together with the Vibewire community to discuss everything from politics to society and culture. Past guests have included Tanya Plibersek MP, DJ Spooky that Subliminal Kid from New York, and software guru Alan Kay. The 2008 e-Festival of Ideas had over 5000 visitors.
In 2009, the e-Festival of Ideas will take place not at vibewire.org, but also through a variety of interactive media channels including Twitter, video streaming, live discussions and real-world adventuring in the form of pervasive gaming.
An anthology of the richest conversations and articles arising from the Festival will be printed and made available via e-book. Find out what motivates Australian youth through this unique project, capturing the views, hopes and passions of young Australians.
Pervasive/ Serious Games
This year, Vibewire is excited to incorporate pervasive gaming – a real-life, technologically-infused choose-your-own-adventure experience – into the Festival. Using technology from dummy websites, mobiles, Bluetooth, video and digital cameras, pervasive games take gaming to the physical world.
In the e-Festival of Ideas, we’ll be using a version of Pervasive Gaming called Serious Games, which aims to challenge perceptions of culture, society, democracy and the environment. The games will be based on discussion topics from the e-Festival.
Not only are we looking for people to play the games, but also people to create them. To give you the skills to do so, Vibewire is hosting workshops in how to create and run Pervasive Games, featuring Janine Cahill of Global Youth Futures. Workshop participants can stay on board and create Pervasive Games as part of the e-Festival of Ideas.
