As one of the older gen, I loved to read this and get a lesson on the energy of young people and how they're using new technology to promote their art. Also good to think fabulous galleries like the MCA are actively encouraging young artists and art lovers to come and use its space. Would love to to see more art on the streets of Sydney and maybe this article will inspire more people to do just that.

Good to hear of the resurgence of the novella. It gives me hope that one day I'll be able to get some thoughts down. Who knows, a few thousand words at a time and I might get there. Had never really thought about the history of the novella and how it was cold shouldered by the thick-spined larger novels in book stores. Also good to hear that the ebook might be good for the shorter form. Thanks Michelle.

Banning a religious practice does not have to breach 'rights' to freedom of religion. There are religious practices such as child marriage, polygamy and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM is mandated in two schools of Islamic law and forbidden in none) which are illegal under Australian Law. Banning these supports human rights and equality rather than being a breach of 'freedom of religion'.

I therefore support law/s which ban face coverings.

Good piece, Michelle. And helpful. Four books in, I still feel a desperate desire to pen a novel. And am as desperate as ever for ways to motivate and help me keep my backside on the chair. Starting out, I took the pressure off by aiming to write a short story, then another, and another...set in the environs of a factory. I was too intimidated to even think 'novel'. Now I know that first draft is like any awkward social situation, a bit clumsy, embarrassing, uncertain, everyone waiting to be introduced. Things only begin to warm up once you know people's names and a little about them, and things tend to get warmer the more you know. Until you're in the middle of a red-hot party and can't drag yourself away. Note to self (to be repeated every day): It's a process. Trust it.

We see a lot of "education campaigns" - but these just end up being "advertising campaigns". It'd be great to see more of the money being used supporting community groups who work with young people already.

The high rate of Indigenous youth committing suicide, particularly in the NT is concerning. A more cultural type of intervention may be more effective. Rosemary Wanganeen produced a 'seven phase grief and loss' process that could be a promising beginning...
